Our MISSION
is to promote a culture of body acceptance through clothing-optional recreation, education, and community outreach.

"Body Acceptance is the idea, Nude Recreation is the way." ~Lee Baxandall
Few individuals have had a greater impact on modern American naturism than Lee Baxandall (1935–2008), writer, activist, educator, and founder of The Naturist Society. In 1980, Baxandall recognized the need for a national organization that would advocate for body acceptance, protect clothing-optional spaces, and give a unified voice to naturists across North America. His vision extended beyond recreation; he believed naturism could foster self-acceptance, respect for others, personal freedom, and a healthier relationship with the natural world.
Before founding The Naturist Society, Baxandall was already an accomplished author, editor, and social activist. Drawing on his experience in public advocacy, he helped transform naturism from a largely private activity into a visible social movement. He championed public education, organized national naturist events, promoted legal advocacy, and helped create resources that connected naturists across the country. His efforts laid the foundation for many of the clothing-optional opportunities and freedoms enjoyed today.
More than four decades later, The Naturist Society continues to carry forward Baxandall’s mission. In a world increasingly affected by body-image pressures, social isolation, and digital disconnection, the organization provides a welcoming community built on acceptance, authenticity, and respect. Through educational programs, publications, events, and outreach, The Naturist Society helps individuals discover the benefits of naturism while promoting understanding and acceptance within society.
Joining The Naturist Society means becoming part of a movement that values freedom, inclusivity, and positive body image. It is an opportunity to connect with like-minded people, support naturist advocacy and education, and help ensure that future generations can experience the same sense of community and personal liberation that inspired Lee Baxandall’s vision more than forty years ago.

For more than four decades, N Magazine has served as one of the most respected publications in the naturist movement. Its roots can be traced to the early years of The Naturist Society, founded by Lee Baxandall in 1980 to promote body acceptance, protect clothing-optional recreation, and provide a thoughtful public voice for naturism. The organization’s original publications evolved from Clothed With The Sun to Nude & Natural, and ultimately to today’s N Magazine, which continues to inform, educate, and connect naturists across North America and beyond.
Unlike publications that focus primarily on destinations or recreation, N Magazine has long explored the broader ideas behind naturism. Through reporting, commentary, travel features, personal stories, history, arts, culture, and discussions of body acceptance, the magazine documents the ongoing evolution of naturist life and thought. It has been described by The Naturist Society as a journal of record for English-speaking naturism, preserving the stories, achievements, and challenges that have shaped the movement.
Today, membership in The Naturist Society Foundation includes access to a community dedicated to promoting a culture of body acceptance through education, recreation, and outreach. Members receive N Magazine, gain insight into naturist destinations and events, stay informed about issues affecting the naturist community, and help support an organization that continues to advance Lee Baxandall’s vision of a more accepting and body-positive society.
For those who are curious about naturism, newly discovering the lifestyle, or seeking a deeper connection with the community, N Magazine offers more than information—it provides context, perspective, and a continuing conversation about the values that have made naturism a meaningful part of countless lives for generations.
From its earliest days, The Naturist Society recognized that the strength of naturism lies not only in individual experiences, but in the connections that bring people together. Naturists and nudists have long benefited from sharing ideas, supporting common goals, and building relationships that extend across clubs, resorts, beaches, organizations, and communities.
Networking has played a vital role in preserving and expanding naturist opportunities. When individuals and organizations communicate, collaborate, and work toward shared objectives, they create a stronger and more unified voice for body acceptance, personal freedom, and clothing-optional recreation. Through publications, events, educational programs, and community outreach, The Naturist Society has helped connect generations of naturists who might otherwise never have found one another.
Today, that mission remains as important as ever. In a rapidly changing world, meaningful connections help strengthen the naturist movement, foster understanding, and create new opportunities for growth. By bringing people together, sharing knowledge, and encouraging cooperation, The Naturist Society continues to demonstrate a simple truth: when naturists work together, the entire community benefits.
For decades, The Naturist Society has brought people together through festivals, gatherings, and reunions that celebrate the spirit of community at the heart of naturism. These events have provided opportunities for naturists from across the country to connect, learn, and share experiences in a welcoming and accepting environment.
More than just social gatherings, naturist festivals create lasting bonds. They are places where old friends reunite, new friendships begin, and a shared appreciation for body acceptance and personal freedom strengthens the sense of belonging that defines the naturist community. Whether attending for the first time or returning year after year, participants often discover that the greatest benefit of these events is the people they meet and the connections they make. Through these gatherings, The Naturist Society continues its tradition of building community one friendship at a time.
